explosive eruptions
Sudden forceful discharges
Explosive eruptions are volcanic events where magma fragments violently as dissolved gases rapidly expand, ejecting rock, ash, and pyroclastic material into the atmosphere.
These contrast with effusive eruptions, where lava flows relatively gently.
The most explosive eruptions can devastate surrounding areas and affect global climate: Mount St. Helens produced a catastrophic explosive eruption in 1980.
