exit permits
Leave-the-country papers
Exit permits are government-issued documents authorizing a person to leave a country.
Most nations allow free departure, but some require citizens or residents to obtain official permission before traveling abroad.
The requirement is associated with authoritarian regimes restricting emigration: Soviet citizens needed exit permits to leave the country.
Exit permits may also apply to foreigners whose status requires clearance before departure.
