executive veto

Leader blocks legislation

An executive veto is the power of a president, governor, or other chief executive to reject legislation passed by a legislature.

The vetoed bill typically fails unless the legislature overrides it, usually requiring a supermajority: The governor's executive veto killed the tax reform bill.

Some executives have line-item veto power, allowing them to reject specific provisions while approving the rest.
