enjambement
Verse crossing lines
Enjambement is the continuation of a sentence or phrase from one line of poetry to the next without a pause or break at the line's end.
Rather than stopping where the line does, the sense runs over into the following line, creating momentum and tension between the poem's metrical structure and its syntax.
The technique allows poets to emphasize particular words, create surprise, or achieve a more conversational rhythm.
The meaning spills / into the next line demonstrates enjambement in action.
