endangered status
Near extinction designation
Endangered status is the official classification given to a species at serious risk of extinction.
Wildlife agencies designate species as endangered when their populations have declined to critically low levels due to habitat loss, hunting, pollution, or other threats.
The designation typically triggers legal protections: The gray wolf's endangered status prohibited hunting across most states.
Species may be upgraded to "threatened" as populations recover, or downgraded to "critically endangered" as they decline further.
