ecdysiast
Burlesque stage performer
Ecdysiast is a humorous or deliberately pretentious term for a striptease performer.
The word was coined in the 1940s from the Greek root for molting or shedding skin, likening the removal of clothing to a snake shedding its skin.
It appears mainly in crossword puzzles and as a joke about euphemism: She preferred to call herself an ecdysiast rather than a stripper.
