E'er is a poetic contraction of ever, used almost exclusively in verse and song lyrics where the meter requires a single syllable: Whate'er betide, if e'er we meet again.
The word sounds archaic and literary, appearing in hymns, folk songs, and deliberately old-fashioned writing.
