dog pounds
Municipal animal shelters
Dog pounds are facilities where stray, lost, or unlicensed dogs are held by municipal authorities.
The term evokes underfunded, grim conditions compared to the gentler "animal shelter." Dogs unclaimed after a set period may be euthanized or put up for adoption.
