dern

Folksy mild oath

Dern is a dialectal or archaic exclamation, a euphemistic alteration of "darn" (itself a softening of "damn").

It appears mainly in older American regional speech, particularly Southern and rural dialects: Dern it all, I forgot the keys.

As an adjective or adverb, it intensifies like damn or darn: That dern dog got into the trash again.
