derby matches
Neighboring teams clash
Derby matches are games between local rivals in team sports, especially football (soccer).
The rivalry typically stems from geographic proximity—teams from the same city or region—though shared history or cultural divisions also fuel the intensity.
These matches carry heightened stakes for fans regardless of league standings: The Manchester derby drew record crowds.
Also called local derbies or simply derbies.
