dematting

Removing pet tangles

Dematting is the process of removing mats—tangled clumps of fur—from an animal's coat, typically a dog or cat.

It involves carefully working through or cutting out dense tangles that regular brushing can't handle: The groomer spent an hour dematting the neglected poodle.

Severe matting can pull painfully on the skin and trap moisture, making dematting both cosmetic and necessary for the animal's comfort.
