deject
Crush someone's spirit
To deject is to make someone dispirited or downcast—to cast them down emotionally.
The word is rare in modern usage, almost entirely displaced by its past participle dejected: She looked dejected after the loss.
The noun dejection survives in formal contexts for a state of low spirits.
