darkest timeline
Bleakest alternate universe
Darkest timeline refers to a hypothetical version of events where everything went wrong—the worst possible outcome among all conceivable alternatives.
The phrase comes from the television show *Community*, which played on the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics.
It's now used humorously or dramatically to describe periods of misfortune or social/political disaster: We're clearly living in the darkest timeline.
The phrase often carries ironic detachment, acknowledging that things are bad while framing them through pop-culture absurdity.
