dark background
Shadowy visual field
A dark background is a surface or setting that is deep in color or low in light, against which other elements appear.
In photography and design, subjects placed against a dark background stand out more dramatically: The portrait used a dark background to emphasize her face.
The phrase also describes someone's mysterious or troubled past: He came from a dark background that he rarely discussed.
