coronel
Archaic military title
Coronel is an archaic or dialectal spelling of colonel, the military rank.
English borrowed the word from Italian *colonnello* but was influenced by Spanish *coronel*, creating competing spellings.
The modern spelling settled on colonel while preserving the "kernel" pronunciation that coronel better represented.
The form survives mainly in historical texts and some proper names.
