core drilling
Hollow bit excavation
Core drilling is a method of cutting cylindrical holes through material—concrete, rock, ice, or earth—using a hollow drill bit that extracts a solid cylinder called a core.
The technique serves both construction purposes core drilling for plumbing pipes and scientific sampling, where the extracted cores reveal geological or climate history: Ice core drilling in Antarctica provides data on ancient atmospheres.
