conservative Democrats
Centrist party members
Conservative Democrats are members of the Democratic Party who hold more right-leaning positions on certain issues—fiscal restraint, gun rights, or social traditionalism—than the party mainstream.
Historically dominant in the South before the partisan realignment of the late twentieth century, they now represent a diminished but persistent faction: The bill passed with support from conservative Democrats in swing districts.
