complicated grief

Stuck in loss

Complicated grief is a prolonged, intense form of mourning that doesn't ease with time.

While ordinary grief gradually softens, complicated grief remains acute—the bereaved may feel stuck, unable to accept the loss or resume normal life months or years later.

The term appears in clinical contexts to distinguish grief that may benefit from professional treatment: She was diagnosed with complicated grief after her son's death.

Also called prolonged grief disorder.
