complementary colours
Mutually enhancing hues
Complementary colours are pairs that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel—red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple.
When placed side by side, they create maximum visual contrast; when mixed, they neutralize each other toward grey or brown.
Artists use complementary pairs to make elements pop or to create vibrant shadows: She painted the orange sunset against a deep blue sky.
