colostomy
Surgical abdominal opening
A colostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the abdominal wall through which part of the colon is brought to the surface, allowing waste to bypass the rectum and empty into an external bag.
The opening itself is also called a colostomy, or more precisely a stoma.
Colostomies may be temporary or permanent, depending on the underlying condition: She had a colostomy after colon cancer surgery.
