coach up

Train for improvement

Coach up is an informal verb phrase meaning to improve someone's skills or performance through focused instruction and encouragement.

It's used especially in sports and business contexts where a mentor works intensively with someone to bring them up to speed or help them reach their potential.

The offensive coordinator spent the offseason coaching up the young quarterback.

Unlike simply "coach," the addition of "up" emphasizes elevation or improvement from a lower starting point.
