child welfare agencies
Youth protection services
Child welfare agencies are government or private organizations responsible for protecting children from abuse, neglect, and unsafe living conditions.
They investigate reports of maltreatment, arrange foster care placements, facilitate adoptions, and provide family support services.
In the U.S., each state operates its own system, often called Child Protective Services or Department of Children and Family Services: The child welfare agency placed the kids with their grandmother while investigating the parents.
