chianti bottle
Wicker-wrapped wine container
A chianti bottle is the distinctive straw-wrapped flask traditionally used for Italian chianti wine.
The round-bottomed bottle sits in a woven straw basket (called a fiasco) that allows it to stand upright.
Once ubiquitous as candle holders in Italian-American restaurants, the wrapped bottles have become nostalgic symbols of mid-20th-century dining: The red-checkered tablecloth and dripping chianti bottle completed the trattoria atmosphere.
