cheat death
Defy the reaper
To cheat death is to survive a situation that should have been fatal—a near-drowning, a plane crash, a terminal diagnosis defied.
The phrase casts death as an opponent who has been tricked or outmaneuvered, at least temporarily: He's cheated death so many times I'm starting to think he's immortal.
Often used for dramatic escapes or unexpected recoveries.
