casehardening
Hardening outer layer
Casehardening is a metalworking process that hardens the outer surface of steel while leaving the interior softer and more flexible.
The result combines a wear-resistant exterior with a tough, shock-absorbing core.
The term extends figuratively to any process that toughens someone's exterior: Years of rejection had casehardened her against criticism.
Also spelled case-hardening or as two words.
