caramel syrup

Liquid burnt sugar

Caramel syrup is a sweet, pourable liquid made by cooking sugar until it browns, then thinning it with water or cream.

It's used to flavor coffee drinks, drizzle over desserts, or sweeten various foods: I added caramel syrup to my latte.

Commercial versions are shelf-stable; homemade caramel syrup should be refrigerated.
