A cafeteria line is the queue of people waiting to select food in a cafeteria, or the serving area itself where food is displayed for self-service.
The term evokes the slow shuffle past steam trays and sneeze guards: We stood in the cafeteria line for twenty minutes.
By extension, it can describe any sequential selection process: The bill became a cafeteria line of amendments.
