burn book

Secret insult collection

A burn book is a notebook or collection where people record cruel or disparaging comments about others, typically classmates or acquaintances.

The term gained currency from the 2004 film *Mean Girls*, where a burn book catalogued gossip and insults.

It now applies to any format—physical or digital—used to compile negative observations about people: They kept a burn book ranking everyone in their friend group.
