bugging out

Leaving in haste

Bugging out means leaving quickly, especially fleeing a dangerous situation.

The phrase comes from military slang for rapid withdrawal: We need to bug out before the storm hits.

It also describes eyes bulging from shock or fear: His eyes were bugging out of his head.

In casual use, bugging out can mean acting crazy or losing composure: She was totally bugging out over the news.
