brood mares
Stud farm mothers
Brood mares are female horses kept primarily for breeding.
The term emphasizes their reproductive function rather than their use for riding or work: The ranch maintains a dozen brood mares to produce foals each spring.
Used disparagingly of women, it reduces them to their childbearing capacity.
