break cover

Leave your hiding

To break cover is to emerge from a hiding place, originally a hunting term for when game flushes from concealment.

The phrase extends to any situation where someone or something hidden becomes visible or exposed: The fugitive broke cover to buy supplies.

In military and surveillance contexts, it means abandoning concealment to move or act openly.
