born blind
Sightless from birth
Born blind describes someone who has been without sight from birth, as opposed to losing vision later in life.
The phrase distinguishes congenital blindness from acquired blindness: She was born blind and learned to read through Braille.
It appears in discussions of disability, development, and perception—philosophers have long asked whether someone born blind could, if suddenly given sight, recognize objects they'd previously known only by touch.
