boning up

Reviewing before exams

Boning up is studying intensively, usually to prepare for something specific: I spent the weekend boning up on contract law before the exam.

The phrase suggests cramming or refreshing knowledge rather than learning from scratch.

Often followed by "on" to indicate the subject: She's boning up on her Spanish before the trip.
