baseline measurement
Initial reference point
A baseline measurement is an initial data point collected before an intervention, treatment, or change occurs.
It establishes normal conditions against which future measurements are compared: We took baseline measurements of blood pressure before starting the medication.
The term appears across medicine, science, and business wherever tracking change over time matters.
