barber surgeons
Bloodletters with razors
Barber surgeons were medical practitioners of the medieval and early modern periods who performed surgery, bloodletting, tooth extraction, and other procedures alongside cutting hair and shaving.
The red-and-white striped barber pole originated as their trade sign, representing bloody bandages.
The professions eventually split, with surgeons gaining higher status and barbers limited to grooming.
