bad call
Referee's costly mistake
A bad call is a decision or judgment that turns out to be wrong or ill-advised.
The phrase comes from sports officiating, where a referee's bad call is a mistaken ruling: The umpire's bad call cost them the game.
It extends to any poor decision: Trusting him with the money was a bad call.
The opposite is a good call.
