Automated checkout is a system allowing customers to scan and pay for purchases without a human cashier.
The machines are ubiquitous in grocery stores and retail chains: I always use the automated checkout when I'm just grabbing a few things.
Also called self-checkout.
The experience often involves an insistent voice warning about unexpected items in the bagging area.
