artificial ice

Artificial ice is ice produced by mechanical refrigeration rather than natural freezing.

The term distinguished manufactured ice from ice harvested from frozen lakes and rivers, which was the primary source until the late 19th century.

Now that virtually all commercial ice is artificially made, the distinction has become largely historical.
