almosts

Not quite successes

Almost is an adverb that is similar in meaning to nearly.

It is always used before another adverb or adjective: I’m almost ready to leave.

It can also be used before a noun phrase: There were almost 100 people at the meeting.

The same word may be used as a plural noun, with the meaning of things that were not quite successful, or something that nearly happened: That was a weekend of almosts and could-have-beens.
