Waldo

Elusive striped figure

Waldo is a remote manipulator—a mechanical device that translates hand movements into actions performed at a distance, typically for handling hazardous materials or working in inaccessible spaces: The technician used waldos to handle the radioactive sample.

The term comes from a 1942 Robert Heinlein story featuring such devices.

Waldo is also a given name, familiar from the *Where's Waldo?* picture books.
