Ugly Americans
Rude American travelers
Ugly Americans refers to American tourists or expatriates abroad who behave boorishly—loud, demanding, culturally insensitive, and expecting everyone to accommodate American customs.
The stereotype emerged after World War II as international travel became common: The ugly Americans at the next table complained loudly that no one spoke English.
The term comes from a 1958 novel of that title, though it has drifted from the book's original meaning.
