The Last Samurai
Dying breed's end
A 2003 film starring Tom Cruise as an American military officer who becomes immersed in Japanese samurai culture during the Meiji era.
The title also refers to a 2000 novel by Helen DeWitt about a mother raising a prodigy son, entirely unrelated to the film.
In either case, *The Last Samurai* evokes themes of vanishing traditions and noble resistance to modernity.
