Statler and Waldorf
Grumpy theater critics
Statler and Waldorf are the two elderly hecklers from *The Muppet Show* who sit in the balcony and mock the performances below.
Their names reference famous hotels.
The pair has become shorthand for any curmudgeonly critics who complain from the sidelines while contributing nothing themselves: Every office has its Statler and Waldorf in the back of the meeting room.
