Sisyphean labour

Futile recurring effort

Sisyphean labour is work that is endless, futile, and ultimately pointless—like the punishment of Sisyphus in Greek mythology, condemned to roll a boulder up a hill only to watch it roll back down, forever.

The phrase describes any task that must be repeated endlessly without lasting result: Cleaning up after toddlers is Sisyphean labour.
