Panj Pyare
Five beloved ones
Panj Pyare (Punjabi, "five beloved ones") are the five Sikhs who volunteered their lives when Guru Gobind Singh called for heads at the 1699 Vaisakhi gathering—they became the first initiates of the Khalsa, the Sikh community of the baptized.
Today, five Sikhs representing the Panj Pyare lead religious ceremonies and processions: The Panj Pyare walked at the front of the Nagar Kirtan parade.
