Niobe

Grief turned stone

Niobe is a figure from Greek mythology—a queen whose boast that her many children made her superior to the goddess Leto brought divine punishment.

Apollo and Artemis killed all her children, and Niobe wept until she turned to stone.

A Niobe is thus someone consumed by inconsolable grief, especially for lost children: She sat like Niobe, weeping for what could not be undone.
