London commuter belt
Capital's outer suburbs
The London commuter belt is the ring of towns and suburbs surrounding London from which people travel daily into the city for work.
Also called the Home Counties region, it extends into Surrey, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, and Berkshire, where housing is often more affordable than central London but rail links make city jobs accessible: Property prices in the commuter belt have risen sharply.
