Green Belt

Protected urban fringe

Green Belt refers to a protected zone of undeveloped land surrounding a city, intended to prevent urban sprawl and preserve open space: London's Green Belt has restricted development since the 1930s.

The term also designates an intermediate rank in martial arts like judo or karate, below brown and black belts: She earned her green belt after six months of training.
