Chicago Fire
1871 urban disaster
The Chicago Fire was a catastrophic blaze that swept through Chicago in October 1871, killing hundreds and leaving a third of the city homeless.
The fire's origin is popularly but apocryphally attributed to Mrs.
O'Leary's cow kicking over a lantern.
Chicago Fire is also the name of the city's Major League Soccer team, and a television drama series about Chicago firefighters.
