Black Church
African-American Protestant tradition
Black Church refers collectively to Protestant Christian denominations and congregations in the United States that have historically served African American communities.
These churches emerged from the experiences of slavery and segregation, when Black Americans were excluded from or marginalized in white congregations.
The Black Church has been central not only to religious life but to social organization, political activism, and cultural identity, serving as a cornerstone of the civil rights movement and continuing as a significant force in African American community life.
